He’s lurking around. Too busy to post frequently I suppose. I fear he may have found what we’ve all been searching for…..a life….. Maybe he’s taking time off to restring and tune all those guitars and basses he owns. Jay S

He e-mailed me, saying he’d been skiing, starting a new band, and moonlighting as a Chippendale dancer. O.K., I made that last one up. He’s lurking, busy, hitting the major threads, and saving his woo-hoo’s for one big release. — -rob O< "Earth Angel, Earth Angel…" /() ^^

Chiropractic doesn’t really hurt; it’s more like a release of tension. I was having some CTS symptoms a few months ago and went to my Chiro. He held my shoulder and quickly jerked my arm downward. I saw stars for a second, and then felt "pins and needles" in my hand. After a few minutes that sensation went away, and my wrist was good as new. It was a little uncomfortable, but it wasn’t torture; certainly it’s better than getting an injection. — John Check out www.js3jazz.com to hear my tunes and get FREE bass lessons

I agree. My general practitioner was nearly useless. I self referred to an orthopedist who was enlightened enough to prescribe physical therapy. It worked for me! > Good luck, man… hope everything works out.

Jay, That’s an awful lot of Ibuprofen. It’s like Frank Zappa once said about speed, "Rot your heart, rot your lungs, rot your kidneys, cucuracha!" Last time I had tendonitis, I saw the clown who was posing as my doctor at that time. He gave me an anti-inflammatory. It sort of worked. I went back and told him and he upped the dosage. I had gastric problems that need not be described in detail. I saw my chiropractor and he cured it, never to return, in two visits. Moving along in time to a few years ago, I developed issues with my RC and AC (Rotator cuff, and some other cuff that starts with A) in my shoulder from having moved about 80 tons of various materials manually building a new garden for my wife. I thought I was being sensible by not trying to do it all at once, just in the decent weather over two years. <<A little wake up call to guys in their mid-50s doing that kind of macho crap–DON’T! Hire a couple of stout young lads, make sure it’s in warm weather so they have to take their shirts off. Let the wife watch to make sure they’re doing it right. Reap vast amounts of affection and have the energy to reciprocate.>> Saw my new, intelligent, open-minded, young doctor who gave me some Vioxx to try and mentioned the steroid injections. Vioxx worked fine to alleviate the symptoms, but didn’t treat the problem. Doctor and I both thought that while the injections might work, the long term was not desirable. He mention physical therapy. I trotted off to see a friend who does very aggressive body work. One session of character building work and it was gone, never to return. Moral of this long-winded dissertation is: Change doctors, seek alternative therapy, say no to drugs unless they’re recreational, and as others have mentioned, drink plenty of water. Jay, I’m troubled by a similar problem in right forearm and found surprising help from a local chiropractor who’s certified in something called "advanced release therapy" or "ART". Its basically a form of _deep_ muscle massage (it feels like he’s trying to rip the muscles right off my bones when he’s doing it- no fun, but it doesn’t take very long). With me, he started in my neck and shoulder and worked down. After three visits I was nearly pain free and it hasn’t come back anywhere near as bad as it was. Just to be careful, I did switch a couple of months ago to lighter strings and lower action to force me to play lighter, but I’m not routinely taking any NSAIDs. So far, it seesm to be doing the job. My daughter is a dancer and he’s helped her as well with injury recovery and some range of motion issues. Might be worth looking into… Phil

Jay: Is this doctor an Ortho, or just a Family Practicioner? Go see an Upper Body Extremities Specialist if you can… mine was WONDERFUL, and put me in touch with some tremendous physical therapists… it’s tough work changing how your body works, but it’s worth it! Good luck, man… hope everything works out. Corey

Good advice Bud.I’ve just read q/a session on a Richard Thompson mailing list (blatant plug http://www.richardthompson-music.com/ ) and he suffers from a similar complaint. He actually ices his elbow before and after a gig, does specific exercises and weights designed to help (despite Jay’s Dr’s ignorance there are some) and has even adjusted the height of his guitar strap in an effort to eliminate the problem.Of course, this means a harder playing angle for your fretting hand if the bass is lower but that must be preferable to being in pain. I’m guessing Jay plays his bass high up? Doesn’t he have a chart that has my medical history on it?? So he jumped right to writing me another steroid injection prescription. I asked about alternative options. I have a lot of gigs coming up , and the last injection put me out of commission for about a week. He gave me a sample of "Mobicox" (sounds like the body part of a white whale) to try and if it doesn’t help, come back for the injection.
