Migraines and craniosacral therapy

Categories: Chiropractic Center

Question:

have any of you tried craniosacral therapy for migraine treatment?  I am currently taking depakote and still getting migraines occassionally.  I would like to find an alternative therapy that works. Becci

Response:

I know as a chiropractor, that I am supposed to be open minded but I attended a few lectures on cranialsacral technique and find it to be quite hard to believe.  The theory (among others) is that the sutures (the connecting points between the different bones of the skull) still move beyond the age of maturity.  And by applying 5 grams of pressure (about the weight of a nickle) to the skull you can affect the body in some "miraculous" ways. I find two problems with this: 1) The sutures DO NOT move past the age of maturity in live (non-cadavor) humans.  The studies that they site show movement in cadavors which might be due to breakdown of tissue surrounding the suture. 2) Even if the sutures moved, 5 grams of pressure is far from enough to cause a change in the bodies function.  Look at it this way, there is enough variation in the length (and therefore, weight) of peoples hair that causes many grams of pressure on the sutures.
