A New Dr.????
Question:
Does anyone know of any good pain mangement Doc in Texas, hopefully central Texas. Ones that are not afraid to give their patients opiates. I am at the end of my ropes with the Dr. I have. I have tried alot of stuff already, like, Epidural Shots, Facet Injections, a double spinal fusion, TENS units, Chiropractor (I used to work in my Chiro’s office), ultra sound, EMS, massage, every NSAID, Vicodin, the oxy worked the best but cant get that anymore. My Dr.s reason for not rx ing any pain meds is because he said he doesnt go any higher than Vicodin for non cancer patients. He is the only pain mangement doc in town here that my insurance will let me see. At one time I was on Oxycontin 20mg two times a day with oxy ir 5mg for breakthrough pain, before surgery, he seems to have forgoten about that. I just feel trapped, I made a apointment with my surgeon for this week so maybe he will be able to fo something for me (yeah rgiht) I am just tired of not being listened to, my Dr. actually used the fact that I have mental condition (I am bi-polar and under control with medication) against me, as a reason not to give me medication. It is like a power struggle every time I go the the Dr. I am not one who shows my pain alot, I feel it, but I dont express it until I am home alone, so he doesnt see the fact that I cant put on shoes, I wear sandals or slip on shoes, shaving my legs is a day long event usually involving tears. I can tell him, but it is like he doent really brlieve me, I dont know if my age has something to do with it. I am 22 now and have been his patient for 2 years. I have had back problems since I can remeber, and very bad since I was 13. And the whole losing weight thing, I would if I could, I dont really want to live 45 pounds overweight, but I cant exercsise because of the pain, I get told to suck up. I am sorry for such a long post, but it feels good to rant for a while. ~Amy-Beth~

Hi Amy Beth I’m so very sorry to hear the pain you are going through. Although our primary conditions are very different (I have visceral myopathy) you sound kinda like me (I keep things to myself). I wanted to write as I am young also (26years old now but was born with my disease) & so know what it is like to have illness at a young age. I am Australian so can’t help in finding you a pain doctor i Texas but I’m sure someone will give you the Web address (I don’t know it) for Skip Bakers web site. This web site helps people find REAL pain doctors who prescribe whatever is needed to control the pain (be it an NSAID or an opiate). Maybe you could find a doctor in your area then. My disease is considered terminal (most people with visceral myopathy die in childhood…..I have a friend with visceral neuropathy & her prognosis is better) & so I’ve never had much problem getting pain meds. The only trouble I had was having them in IM form in the home…..they allowed me home on a PCA (which is IV but through a machine that you can’t interfere with – they program it & I can’t alter it) but I don’t like dilaudid & demerol IV as it kinda makes my head weird. I prefer it IM but they didn’t like me having all these vials of demerol & dilaudid in the home…not so much because of me but incase someone broke in or a visitor to our home got hold of them. I hope you all the best & that you get some much needed analgesia. HI .. I am trying a pain Dr here in Houston .. Dr Pawan Grover.. so far, cervical facet joint injections ..(NO pain during procedure..he used Versed) ..and It might have helped a little ..(cortisone/lidocaine) ..but not major. He’s only prescribed Vicoden 7.5 so far .. I don’t know if he will REALLY prescribe an adequate med, yet ..ie ..Percodan or something that WORKS .. I’m starting to get the ‘well, the next step up from sch III is to sch II ‘ so ..I don’t know what will be next.. probably ONE more go round with injections .. so,we’ll see. BUT ..I’ve been told there is a GOOD pain Dr here in Houston Dr Joel Hochman ….who is not afraid to prescribe adequate meds to pain patients .. I didn’t go to him because it’s hard for me to get to that part of town. anyhow ..hope this helps ! Anita
