Cheap as Dirt?

Question:

The story I read was quoted 360 million with the dirt being only 30 million and the rest being equipment and labor. Even if it was 1.3 billion, think about how long it would take to recoup that investment. I believe that an airport gets about $500 per landing or takeoff on a commercial jet. — Rob Munach, PE Excel Engineering Carrboro, NC

Evidently they are getting UPS or FedEx to move the dirt. Holger Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither suffer much nor enjoy much because they live in the grey twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat. $1.3 BILLION for *1* runway?? Are they filling in Georgia’s version of the Grand Canyon with dirt imported from Italy? — Lou’s Bullshit Detector! http://www.watchingyou.com/bullsht.html

The city normally pays very slowly and requires tons of paperwork.  I would guess that a significant fraction of the $1.3b factors that in. — Rich Greenberg   Work:  Rich.Greenberg atsign worldspan.com   +1 770-563-6656 N6LRT   Marietta, GA, USA   Play: richgr atsign panix.com     +1 770-321-6507 Eastern time zone.   I speak for myself & my dogs only.     VM’er since CP-67 Canines:Val(Chinook,CGC,TT), Red & Shasta(Husky,(RIP))        Owner:Chinook-L Atlanta Siberian Husky Rescue. www.panix.com/~richgr/   Asst Owner:Sibernet-L

The red clay is a great building material. Obviously it has to arrive one dump truck at a time. I suppose that they will just dig a quarry for the dirt somewhere off I-85 South about 5 miles from the airport ?

There has hardly ever been any legitamate bidding since the Maynard Jackson administration . It has been major corruption ever since hiding behind the MBE Program . When anyone complains its racism. Ocaissionally a few good down but the leaders ( like Bill Campbell ) and the other big fish  always get away. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Guess the price tag for fill dirt, for ONE new >runway at Hartsfield… >http://www.accessatlanta.com/news/story1.html >only in Atlanta… >– >Regards, IM

Hey, it is ATL.  In my experience, there is absolutely nothing that they cannot screw up, so dirt should be no exception.

Well, don’t forget, Maynard Jackson and Bill Campbell have to get a big cut out of it. Holger Fly free and happy beyond birthdays and across forever, and we’ll meet now and then when we wish, in the midst of the one celebration that never can end. Richard Bach

It is amazing how long they have avoided criminal prosecution in spite of glaring evidence of illegal activities  .  The FBI , Justice Dept investigation  come close but never seem to prosecute them. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->>$1.3 BILLION for *1* runway?? Three inches by three inches, maybe… but it would take a pussy, like you, three weeks and four trips to the chiropractor. >and sell them the dirt for say, $5000?

That’s a low price considering they are going to ship it. Is that by UPS? It would be so much to just haul the dirt in dump trucks. Holger

This is the wrong web page address.  It’s about CNN & Fox News rivalry. What’s the significance of a 3 x 3 foot hole? Do you mean 3 x 3 x 3 or a cubic yard? Holger

Practically everything that Bill Campbell and/or Maynard Jackson come in contact with are corrupt so any kind of contracts like that are probably just a big stealing from the City and/or County. The city government and county government are a disgrace not only to this area but to the whole nation. Yes, but you must understand that this is special aviation-certified dirt. Imagine the astronomical cost of the dirt for the first man-rated commercial spaceport.
